Yakima County 9-1-1 also known as “SunComm” is a multi-agency, multi-discipline, multi-jurisdiction 9-1-1 and Dispatch center serving the City and County of Yakima.
How are 9-1-1 Calls Processed?
Our 9-1-1 Call Takers answer every single 9-1-1 call that is placed from anywhere in Yakima County. Once the call is answered, our highly skilled professionals will work with you to determine your location and the type of assistance you need. Call Takers will often ask numerous questions, but don’t worry this isn’t slowing anyone down from coming to your aid.
As the Call Taker remains on the telephone line with you, their Dispatcher partners are speaking to the appropriate responders who will come to your aid. The whole process is very quick, efficient and designed to save lives!
Who Answers the calls?
Our 9-1-1 Call Takers are trained to give emergency medical instructions should you need them and utilize unique calming techniques in the midst of your emergency. They’re also trained to ask very specific questions to help keep you safe in the event of an emergency. They have superb geographic knowledge of Yakima and the most high-tech resources available to them to provide the citizens of Yakima County the very best possible service.
Our Dispatchers are highly-skilled multi-taskers. Our Dispatchers are responsible for dispatching both Fire and Police agencies while keeping citizen and responder safety at the forefront of all their actions. They dispatch for two different Law Enforcement agencies, the City of Yakima Police and the City of Union Gap Police. They also dispatch all Fire Departments in the Upper Valley; City of Yakima, East Valley, Selah, Training Center, Gleed, Naches, Naches Heights, Nile, Highland and West Valley.
Who’s on our team?
Our SunComm team is made up of 5 Full Time Supervisors, A full Time Training Supervisor, 13 Full time Dispatchers and 14 Full Time 9-1-1 Call Takers. All of our team members must complete an intense training program as well as on-going monthly trainings in order to serve our community to the best of their ability. SunComm’s mission is to enhance the quality of life of the public we serve by providing excellent access to emergency services and by providing superior emergency communications and technical support for the Law Enforcement, Fire and Medical agencies within Yakima County.

Did you know that every phone line now pays a small monthly 9-1-1 tax to support our technology that helps us to get your accurate location in an emergency? It’s only twenty five cents a month; well worth the peace of mind knowing we’ll be able to find you in the midst of an emergency.
